Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010

Delhi commonwealth games gets severe criticism from media and some participating countries about India's poor preparation to host the mega sports event.

Massive corruption scandals, incomplete preparations, security concerns, the 'sub standard' arrangements in the games village all are discussed widely in the media and lead to the withdrawal from the participation of some key sports personalities. Bridge collapse near games village adds to India's games woes. The latest in its kind was the announcement of the opening of the XIX Commonwealth Games. See the excerpts from the TOI news.

"President Pratibha Patil will declare the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games open, denying the British royal family the traditional honour for the first time in the Games history.
The Indian government and Clarence House appeared to be at loggerheads over whether Prince Charles will be asked to declare the 2010 Games open. Senior Indian government aides claimed that President Patil and not Charles would officially declare the Games open on next Sunday.

The claims, made by officials from the Indian department for information and confirmed by sources from the Games' OC, raise questions over the role of the Prince of Wales trip to Delhi next week.

Clarence House insisted Charles will fulfill the duties originally intended for the Queen, The Daily Mail reports."

But my personal view is that nobody can arrange such a mega event without some criticism. Coming days will prove India's ability in conducting a successful sports event and thus boost the rapid growth of sports and tourism sectors in India.
